Carmencita Katubig July 16, 1940 - October 7, 2024

Carmencita Rivera Katubig

Beloved wife, mother, Lola, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by her husband and three children. Born on July 16, 1940, in the Philippines, she was known for her vibrant spirit, warmth, generosity, selflessness, quick wit, and unwavering devotion to her family and Catholic faith.

Carmen was a steadfast pillar of support throughout her husband Dr. Cornelio Katubig’s successful career as a pathologist in various cities in the Midwest, where he practiced for more than 35 years. After immigrating from the Philippines to start a life together in the United States, Carmen and Cornelio faced the challenges of building a new home with resilience and determination. As a devoted wife and mother, Carmen created a loving and stable home, skillfully balancing family life with grace. Her unwavering encouragement and partnership were vital to her husband’s success, and together they raised a family rooted in faith, education, and compassion.

A devoted servant of the church, Carmen lived her faith through tireless volunteer work. From leading the rosary before Mass to preparing and delivering meals to those in need, her heart was always open to helping others. She coordinated church events and brought communion to homebound parishioners, ensuring that no one was left behind in their spiritual journey. Carmen’s deep commitment to her faith led her to sacred pilgrimages to the Vatican, Lourdes, and the Holy Land—trips that brought her immense joy and spiritual fulfillment.

Carmen’s love for creativity and beauty was evident in everything she did, particularly in her home and gardens, where she nurtured her passion for interior design and floral arrangements. With her unique ability to transform spaces with elegance and grace, every corner of her home reflected her artistic touch. But above all, her greatest pride and joy were her family. Carmen was a devoted mother who instilled values of education, perseverance, and hard work in her children, making countless sacrifices to ensure they had access to quality schooling and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

Carmen’s love for her family extended deeply to her parents, Amanda Flordeliza and Fidel Rivera, who preceded her in death, and her five siblings and their families. She cherished her close bond with her youngest sister, Doris Rivera, the only surviving sibling, and her extended family. These connections shaped Carmen’s values of love, loyalty, and faith, which she carried with her throughout her life.

After Dr. Katubig’s retirement, Carmen and Cornelio embraced a new chapter, traveling the world and immersing themselves in the rich cultures of various continents. From Europe to Asia, their adventures were filled with discovery, joy, and a deep appreciation for the world’s diversity. These shared adventures strengthened their bond and left them with beautiful memories of a life well-lived together.

Carmen’s warmth and humor brought joy to everyone around her, often resulting in knee-slapping laughter that reminded us all to find happiness in life’s simple moments. Her creativity extended beyond décor and parties; it was reflected in the way she made people feel valued, creating unforgettable moments for those fortunate enough to know her.

Carmen is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, Dr. Cornelio Patawaran Katubig, and her children: John (Delaina) Katubig, Christina Katubig (Tim) Schellhardt, and Catherine Katubig (Rob) Goga. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Kloe (Joe) LeFevre (32), Dr. Alexandra Katubig (30), Kane Katubig (26), Tim Schellhardt, Jr. (25), Charlie Schellhardt (19), Gavin Goga (27), Grace Goga (25), and Griffin Goga (18). Her legacy of compassion, faith, creativity, and determination will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
