Joseph Sorensen June 3, 1994 - December 21, 2022

Joseph Edward Sorensen

Joe lost his battle with metastatic melanoma on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.  He was 28 years old.

Joe was born in 1994 and grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri.  He graduated from Webster Groves High School in 2012, went on to the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point where he received his Bachelor of Science in Fishery Research and Management in 2016, and earned his Master of Business Administration from Webster University in 2022. During his time as a Statesman, Joe played volleyball all four years and led his team to three state tournaments. Joe often said that playing volleyball was the best decision he ever made. At Stevens Point, Joe enjoyed playing broomball with friends or playing club volleyball, often referring to himself as “the only college athlete in the family.” Joe began his professional career raising bait fish on the shores of Lake Superior. He then headed west to the mountains of Utah, where he aided in the effort to protect native trout populations from invasive species. In 2018, Joe moved back to St. Louis and soon after began his career at Cash App quickly working his way up the ranks to a management position. Second only to fishing, Joe loved being a coach and mentor to those on and off the volleyball court.

Joe was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman in his spare time. Joe often went on fishing and camping trips with friends and family travelling to Wisconsin, Arizona, Maine, and even the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. When he wasn’t fishing in his free time, Joe was either playing or coaching volleyball. During his time in Wisconsin, he coached the girls club team, Air Assault, and upon moving back to St. Louis coached the Ursuline Girls Freshmen and Webster Groves Boys Junior Varsity Volleyball teams. An animated sports enthusiast, Joe was a loyal fan to his Philadelphia sports teams with his favorite being the Philadelphia Eagles.

Joe will be remembered for his amazing sense of humor and powerful storytelling abilities. While never one to show his emotions on his sleeve, Joe was one of the most loyal family members and friends one could ask for.

Joe is survived by his mother, Mary Claire (Luepke) Sorensen, his brother, Matthew Sorensen, and sister, Margaret Sorensen.

    Dear Sorensen family,
My sincere condolences for the loss of your dear son. He was a wonderful friend to my son, Ryan Brown, his UWSP roommate. My heart grieves for you. I am glad Ryan and his girlfriend Kali will be there on the 14th to share memories and grieve in person. I have some photos from the boys UWSP 2016 graduation. If you’d like I could send them to you.
    With love,
    Jane

I was Joe’s algebra teacher and one of his volleyball coaches at WGHS. Joe always brought a positive energy and a smile to everything he did. He was silly but always knew when to to focus and bring the intensity. It was such a pleasure getting to know and work with him. I was so excited to see him working with the boys JV vball team at WGHS and always looked forward to hearing how much he had grown and changed since his own high school days. Your family is in my thoughts.
