Charles Allen Nigh, M.D.
Fortified with the Sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, died peacefully, Thursday May 4, 2023. Beloved spouse of Joan Schaeffer Nigh. Dear Father of Timothy, David (Sarah), Charlie (Janice), Stephen (Mary), Anne Ward (Joe), Mary Margaret Nigh and the late Thomas (Jeannie) Nigh. Dear Son of the late Charles R. and Anna (Moroney) Nigh. Dear brother of the late James (Judith) Nigh. Dear Grandfather of Matt, Carl, Sean, Elle, Peter, Lauren, Evan, Joe, Andrew, Grace, Jordan, Andrew, John, Jenny, Kyle, Ben, and Tanner. Dear Great Grandfather of Grady, Madelyn, Liam, Owen, Emmett, Ava, and Louise. Dear uncle, great uncle, and friend to many.
Dr. Nigh was born December 3, 1927, in Mount Vernon, IL but spent his formative years in Paducah, KY until he moved to St. Louis in 1943. He graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1945 then served 2 years in the U.S. Navy, honorably discharged. He went on to St. Louis University where he earned a medical degree in 1954. Dr. Nigh completed his residency in general surgery at St. Louis University Hospital (formerly Desloge Hospital). In May 1955, he married Joan Schaeffer and began their family, 5 boys and then 2 girls. In 1964, the Nigh Family moved to Kirkwood and joined St. Peter Catholic Church. All 7 of their children attended St. Peter School. Charlie and Joan are still parishioners after 59 years.
He served on staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and Deaconess Hospital. He also served as an associate professor of surgery at SLU Medical School. Dr. Nigh was a society member of the St. Louis Medical Association, St. Louis Surgical Society, American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association. His surgical practice for 30 years was with Southwest Medical Center, retiring in 1993. In retirement he enjoyed woodworking and restoring antique furniture for a charity to benefit handicapped citizens. Later in life they moved to Aberdeen Heights to enjoy their Golden years among many of their friends. They were just shy of 68 years of marriage.
Services: Visitation and funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, May 9 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 243 W. Argonne Dr., Kirkwood, MO. Visitation at 9:30 a.m. with the Mass to follow at 11 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Peter Catholic Church or a charity of your choice appreciated.

May 7, 2023 at 12:26 pmDr. Nigh was a great doctor in the Southwest Medical Center practice. He was one that enjoyed teaching we young nurses at Deaconess Hospital as he made morning rounds. I always like to assist Dr. Nigh. Sympathies to his family at this sad time.
