Donald Shea February 9, 1933 - September 18, 2023

Donald C. Shea

Don passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023 at the age of 90 after battling two cancers for over seven years.  Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church.  Don was the son of Joseph Shea and Margaret (Niehaus) Shea.  He had one sister, the late Dolores Shea, SSND.  Don was a graduate of Our Lady of Sorrows School (OLS), St. Louis University High (SLUH), and St. Louis University (SLU).  He was the beloved husband of Rosemary Hahn Shea for 68 years.  He was the father of Joseph (Stacey) Shea, Joan (Don) O’Neal, Patricia (Ernie-Paul Barrette) Shea, Robert (Bonnie) Shea. Grandfather of Ellen O’Neal, Jaclyn and the late Marty Shea, Grant Larson, Helena (Nick) Vitale and Adrian Shea.  Brother-in-law of Eileen Hahn and step-grandfather of five.

Don was a Certified Public Accountant.  He and Rosemary worked together to create a successful private accounting practice; they served their clients for over 50 years.  He was an accomplished soccer player when he was young and used his knowledge to coach many OLS boys teams.  Don was a good father, a good friend, and a good storyteller – especially about his years in the service when he and Rosemary and then baby Joe lived in Turkey.  He credited SLUH with igniting his lifelong passion for learning; he never stopped studying ancient history and the history of Turkey.  Many Sundays, he drove his children and then grandchildren through the streets of St. Louis, pointing out significant locations while all ate Gus’s Pretzels.  He never lost his ability to recall an amazing number of facts, both in English and in Latin.
