Daniel “Dan” Brian Mertens of St. Louis, Missouri. passed Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at Evelyn’s House Hospice Center, BJC West, St Louis County.

Dan, age 63, was born June 12, 1962 in St. Louis, Missouri.  When was about 10, he and his parents, Evelyn and Edwin Mertens, moved from Garden Lane, Maryland Heights, St. Louis County, Missouri, to near Cherryville, Missouri.  Dan then attended Viburnum High School and graduated high school valedictorian in 1980.  He attended the University of Missouri at Rolla and during his career had a specialty in medical radiation technology, working for Mallinckrodt Medical in St. Louis and Mevion Medical in Boston and St. Louis.  He also worked as a maintenance supervisor of laboratories at Washington University in St. Louis, as well as being a landlord for several residential houses in Richmond Heights (St. Louis County).

Dan was preceded in death by his husband, Grant Wesley Farmer, in 2015.

Dan was the youngest of eight siblings.  Surviving are Joan Mertens, Sharon Dale, Susan Petruso and Dean Mertens. Deceased: Don Mertens, Gail Foley and Dennis Mertens.  And Dan is survived by his long-time close friend, John Miller, of St. Louis.

Services:  Dan and his family are of the Catholic faith.  Friend John plans to distribute Dan’s ashes near an Ozark Missouri state park, a favorite destination for Dan and Grant.  Family members also plan a memorial service.

    I’m so sorry and sad to hear the heartbreaking news of Danny’s passing. I have so many fond childhood memories of him. Praying that God provides all of you with peace, strength and comfort during the difficult times ahead.

    So sorry to here of Dan’s passing. I met him through Grant and we stayed in touch over the years. Dan really was a great guy. The world is a sadder place with his loss.
