Joan Dickhaus Burtelow
95, born May 22nd, 1930, a dedicated educator and lifelong learner, passed away on March 24, 2026. She was the devoted wife of the late W.E. “Ed” Burtelow, with whom she shared a lifetime of adventure and a deep love for traveling the world.
Joan began her academic journey at Nerinx Hall High School, graduating in 1948. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from Webster University and furthered her education by obtaining a Master’s degree from Washington University.
Joan shared her love of literature and language with generations of students, serving as a respected English Teacher at both Kennedy High School and her alma mater, Nerinx Hall High School.
Joan is survived by her children: Anne Hopkins (Bob), Polly Burtelow, Betsy Boyer (Jim), Micheal Burtelow, and Lucy Brown (Jerry). She was preceded in death by her son, the late Matthew Burtelow.
Her legacy continues through her nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy. Joan will be remembered for her sharp mind and dedication to her family.
