John Austin Schloeman
John went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the age of 86. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Neldalee Elizabeth (Curtman) Schloeman, daughter of the late Henry Joseph Curtman and Velma Ethelene (Null) Curtman.
John was born on August 19, 1940 in St. Louis, MO, to parents Phillip Marvin and Mabel Marcella Schloeman. He attended Hamilton grade school as a child and graduated from Normandy High School in 1958.
Following high school, John attended many different courses in engineering as a student at Meramec Junior College and Washington University School of Engineering. He would then go on to take specialized engineering courses at both the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and the University of Minnesota. He worked for several different consulting engineering companies before being hired by Monsanto, where he would work for 37 years before his retirement in 2010.
John met his sweet Nelda at church youth group in St. Louis. They were married on October 3, 1964 at Florissant Assembly of God in Florissant, Missouri. Together they enjoyed many years of traveling to exciting places and participating in many outdoor activities. John loved bird-watching, hiking, camping, taking float trips and nature tours, visiting historical landmarks, and playing golf. He also loved keeping up with various sporting events, including the St. Louis Cardinals, and in his younger years, he was an avid speedskater.
John was always very involved at his church. He and Nelda were part of the group of founding members of West County Assembly of God, and amongst other things, taught the 4th & 5th grade Sunday School classes and Children’s church together there for many years. In addition to that, one of John’s greatest passions was serving for many years as the Royal Ranger Outpost Commander for the Royal Rangers boys ministry at the church and the Sectional Outpost Commander for the St Louis section. He loved teaching young boys about life skills and outdoor survival skills, but most importantly, about following Jesus. He was a good friend and mentor to so many boys, even staying in touch with numerous ones for decades after they had left his class.
John was a loving husband, and he deeply loved his many friends and family members. But most of all, he loved his Lord. He was a tender guy, with a generous heart, a gentle spirit, the most-sincere smile and a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by so many that loved him so dearly.
He is survived by Nelda, his brother-in-law Eugene (Sue) Curtman, niece Tanya (Gary) Gresham, and many great nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services: Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at West County Assembly of God, 13431 North Outer Forty Road Town & Country, MO 63017 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. A lunch will be served after the service in the church gymnasium for all who are able to attend.
Burial will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026 at Bethel Cemetery in Wildwood, MO, at 3:00 pm. All are welcome to join.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Tyson Research Center or West County Assembly God.
